Magick
“We place no reliance on virgin or pidgeon.
Our method is science, our aim is religion.” - Aleister Crowley
Crowley called magick "the Art and Science of causing change in conformity with Will." I've never found a better definition.
Where many people I've communicated with over the years look to religious and spiritual systems for their morality, I've always been more interested in their efficacy:
- What do they do well?
- What does their practice involve?
- What are the effects of their practice(s), both on the practitioner and on the world around hir?
Each tradition has its own strengths, I've found. Here are some of my findings:
Traditions & Strengths:
- Palo Mayombe / Hoodoo
- working with nature spirits, work with ancestor spirits, practical "low magick" work
- Tantra
- breaking taboos, devotional diety work, work with the annihilation of death
- Taoism
- energetic practices/models, physical integration of spiritual practices
- Thelema / Golden Dawn
- work on the magickal Will, intellectual development, HGA / spiritual development work
- Chaos Magick
- breaking up confining belief systems, meta-magick, flexible approaches to multi-traditional methods, method refinement
